The Vedas
The most ancient sacred texts of humanity — eternal knowledge revealed to sages in deep meditation.
The Vedas (वेद) come from Sanskrit root "vid" — "to know." They are considered Apauruṣeya (अपौरुषेय) — not of human origin — eternal truths perceived by enlightened Rishis and compiled by Sage Vyasa.
The Bhagavad Gita is called the "essence of all Vedas" — distilling vast Vedic wisdom into 700 actionable verses.
The Four Sacred Vedas
Rigveda
ऋग्वेद — Veda of Praise
The oldest of the four Vedas, containing hymns of praise to Agni, Indra, Varuna and other Vedic deities. Focuses on cosmic principles and existence.
असतो मा सद्गमय।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय।
मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय॥
Lead me from untruth to truth,
From darkness to light,
From death to immortality.
Samaveda
सामवेद — Veda of Melodies
The "Book of Songs" — melodies and chants for rituals. Foundation of Indian classical music. Krishna says: "Among Vedas, I am Samaveda" (BG 10.22).
Yajurveda
यजुर्वेद — Veda of Rituals
Prose mantras and instructions for Vedic rituals. Exists in Shukla (White) and Krishna (Black) versions. Contains the famous Shanti mantras.
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं
पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय
पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते॥
That is whole, this is whole.
From the whole, the whole arises.
Taking the whole from the whole,
The whole alone remains.
Atharvaveda
अथर्ववेद — Veda of Daily Life
Addresses practical daily life — healing, marriage, agriculture, protection. Foundation of Ayurveda (ancient Indian medicine).
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे
सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्
मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥
We worship the three-eyed One,
Who is fragrant and nourishes all.
As a cucumber from its bondage,
May He free us from death to immortality.
